I hadn’t visited the Grand Canyon (as an adult) until 2003. After having traveled the world, I didn’t think that such a touristed attraction in my own back yard (so to speak) would be so awesome. Six years later, I returned as part of my Southwest Road Trip with my travel-sister, Stella. Also included in this slide show is the surrounding area known as the Painted Desert: Cameron and other parts along historic Route 66.
Here’s what UNESCO has to say about the Grand Canyon:
Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon (nearly 1,500 m deep) is the most spectacular gorge in the world. Located in the state of Arizona, it cuts across the Grand Canyon National Park. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past 2 billion years. There are also prehistoric traces of human adaptation to a particularly harsh environment.
