When my travel companion and I read in the 1996 edition of Lonely Planet Thailand that Pai (which is a sickening three-hour bus ride north from Chiang Mai) was lovely, off the beaten path and “if you blink, you’ll miss it”, that certainly grabbed our attention. We’d already experienced┬áThailand’s second city, Chiang Mai, and were not all that impressed with the north so far. Pai, however, was something else. It was unspoiled and idyllic–at least, it was then. (Now it’s all but ruined due to over-development, thus becoming the Khao San Road of the north.)

More on Pai please. tipsTip: After you visit Pai, continue northwest until you reach Mae Hong Son.
