The ancient city of Ghent (in Flanders) offers up superb Gothic buildings and amazing streetscapes. This is considered a far less touristed option to Bruges.

Every year there is a 10-day festival celebrating Belgium's independence (which falls on July 21). During this time it's nothing short of a 10-day, 24-hour street party. Great fun was had.
